A quixotic prosecutor

November 5, 2018

When defense attorney Larry Krasner ran for District Attorney for Philadelphia last year, he had spent three decades advocating for defendants, had worked pro bono for Act Up and Occupy Philadelphia and Black Lives Matter, and had filed more than 75 lawsuits against the police, alleging brutality and misconduct. When he told his staff that he was running for D.A., they laughed.  The president of the police union called his candidacy “hilarious.” He received no mainstream newspaper endorsements.

He won.

He now oversees 537, including some 300 prosecutors, and an annual budget of $42 million. And is intent on ending mass incarceration.

The New Yorker has a lengthy and informative article about him here.
