I’m working today

October 8, 2018

As someone of Italian heritage (the family legend is that my mother spoke Italian in the home as a child), you’d think I, of all people, would promote the concept of a Columbus Day holiday.

You’d think wrong.

Columbus Day remains a federal holiday, but only 24 states observe it, and two (Alaska and South Dakota) now use the day to honor Native Americans instead.  It is not a state holiday in Vermont, where I live, but it is in New Hampshire, where my office is located.  Meanwhile, cities as diverse as Austin, TX, Davenport, IA, Norman, OK, Kalamazoo, MI and Salt Lake City, UT celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on the second Monday in October.

I happen to like the sound of “Reconciliation Day,” but that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

In the meantime, I’ll put in a full day at the office today.
