There’s some good news, too

January 2, 2019

It’s easy to get extremely distressed about the current state of environmental affairs.  That said, there is a surfeit of good news:

According to this article at

–  Just four months after two of Australia’s largest supermarket chains eliminated single-use plastic bags, the country witnessed an 80% reduction in the use of those bags.

– Meanwhile, both Starbucks and McDonald’s have eliminated plastic drinking straws, and the European Union collectively agreed to ban several single-use plastic products within the next few years.

– Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss announced that he will be contributing $1 billions to launch the Wyss Campaign for Nature: an ambitious collaborative mission to protect 30% of the world’s surface by 2030.

– The world’s second-largest coral reef was removed from the endangered places list after years of national and local conservation efforts.

– Portugal generated enough renewable energy to power the entire country for an entire month. Australia has enjoyed over $40 million in savings from maintenance costs to its electrical grid after it installed the world’s biggest lithium ion battery which generates zero carbon emissions.

– Former NFL lineman Syd Kitson, who played for both the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers, has created Babcock Ranch — a Florida town that is being hailed as America’s first-ever city that is completely powered by solar panels.

There is much, much, much more to do.  But it’s a start.
