Australian Olympic men’s field hockey star Matt Dawson severely injured his finger in a practice two weeks ago. He could have had the finger set and placed in a cast, but it would have meant missing the Paris games.

So he had part of the finger surgically lopped off.

Dawson’s wife called it a “rash choice.” He prefers the term “informed decision.”

We’ll see if the sacrifice is worth it. The Aussies have advanced to the field of eight, and take on the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
