This comes from a book on mathematics that I am currently reading:

First, think of any whole number. If the number is even, divide it by 2. If the number is odd, multiply it by 3, and then add 1. Repeat the process unless the answer is 1.

Irrespective of the number you start with, you will ALWAYS eventually reach the number 1.

Interesting, eh?

But check THIS out: Mathematicians cannot tell us whether this works with EVERY number. So far, they have established, using some high-speed computers, that this works for every number up to around 317,000,000,000,000,000. But maybe, just maybe, there is an even larger number for which it does not work.

We just don’t know.

And, frankly, I really don’t care enough to find out.
