Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared (via video, natch) during Vermont Governor Phil Scott’s regular virus briefing on Tuesday. And he gave the Green Mountain State props for the way it has handled the COVID-19 pandemic.

Actually, it was fairly simple. Wear masks and maintain social distancing. It’s not that hard.

Vermont continues to have the lowest rate of positive tests for the virus in the country — 0.2%, according to state officials, and lowest number of cases per capita. And, as Dr. Fauci points out, Vermont has not succeeded solely because of its low population density. “It isn’t a question of density,” he points out, “It’s a question of what you did or did not do correctly.”  And Vermont, the good doctors says, “has done it correctly.”

But now is not the time to toss the masks and invite the neighbors over for a barbecue, warns Fauci: If we let our guard down, “we are going to see surges that are going to put us back to where we were months ago.”
