Crowds cheered and fireworks erupted when Gary McKee crossed the finish line after completing the marathon this past December 31st. He immediately then helped himself to a beer. He deserved it.

That day marked the 365th consecutive day in which he had run a marathon.

McKee, a 53-year-old father of three who hails from Cumbria in the northwestern corner of England, started running the distance on New Year’s Day last year before reporting for work at the Sellafield nuclear site. In the process, he raised over $1.2 million, which will be split between a cancer support center and a hospice-care organization.

It is estimated that he covered over 9,500 miles over the year, and went through 20 pairs of running shoes.

Oh, and that beer? It was a “Marathon Man” IPA.
