The next time you start to feel sorry for yourself, spend a moment or two to consider the fate of Jeffrey Bauman. Last April, his girlfriend was running the Boston Marathon. He went to the finish line to root her on, and ended up losing both of his legs to a terrorist’s homemade bomb. Today’s New York Times spends a considerable amount of space to his recovery, his resilience and his spirit. I have to believe that Jeffrey Bauman would prefer to be in one piece and not plucked by random chance to spend his life as a double-amputee rather than being the inspiration he is to me, as he is for millions of people. But given the cruel hand he was dealt, he is approaching his recovery with resolve, grace and dignity. I hope to see him cross the finish line on Boylston Street next April.
