Is your current job not satisfying? Is the hubbub of city life starting to overwhelm you? Looking to start over in a position with an impressive job title? I may have just the solution.

The Barrow Borough Council in Cumbria (UK) is searching to find someone to run the Ship Inn, a pub on Piel Island, a dot of land about 50 acres in size, located about half a mile off England’s northwestern coast. Admittedly, the winters are wet and dreary, and you can only access the island by ferry during summer months (Wikipedia tells us that you can also reach the island by foot or all-terrain vehicle, but only at low tide).  But the island is home to a now-vacant castle and abundant wildlife and, perhaps best of all, whoever runs the pub is designated “King of Piel.”

According to an article in the New York Times (which you can access HERE), a resident of the nearby Walney Islands says “We’re not talking about St. Lucia or the Hawaiian islands. We’re talking about a small and very isolated island in the north of England.” Adds the leader of the borough council, “While there are periods when the pub and the island is bustling with people, there will be periods of quiet too — something the successful applicant will need to embrace.”

Before applying, you should be aware that the council is seeking someone who will make a 10-year commitment. No word on whether there’s wi-fi on the island.
