Charlie Buttrey

There are any number of advantages to living and practicing law in the Upper Valley.  To that lengthy list we can add another.  On Friday, I left the office in the mid-afternoon to go to the bank and the post office.  As I walked down Hanover Street, I noticed a pair of ducks attempting to cross the street.  But every time the male tried to lead his partner across, a car would zoom by, and the two would hurriedly retreat.  This happened several times until I approached the ducks and began to talk to them (I am not making this up).  I told them (with words and gestures) that I could lead them safely across the street.  SOMETHING must have clicked inside their little duck heads, because they slowly and cautiously approached me, and I slowly walked into the street, and stopped traffic both ways.  The ducks then nonchalantly crossed the road, I waved the traffic on, and went about my business.  I’m thinking about changing my motto to “Not Just Another Duck Crossing Guard.”
