Two years ago, the Needham, MA home of Harvard fencing coach Peter Brand was appraised at $549,300.  He sold it to Maryland businessman Jie Zhao for nearly $1 million.

Zhao’s son was then admitted to Harvard.

Zhao then sold the house, never having lived in it, for a $324,500 loss.

Zhao insists there was nothing shady about it. His son, he explains, attended a prestigious prep school (no surprise there), had “near-perfect” SAT scores and was a competitive fencer.

Harvard has officially responded that this incident is “not related” in any way to the “Operation Varsity Blues” investigation that has been receiving a lot of media attention. I’m not sure what that has to do with anything.
