As I watched the tragic footage of Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral engulfed in flames, I hearkened back to my visit to Paris two or three years ago.  I didn’t go into the cathedral. I went under it.

Beneath Notre Dame is an archaeological crypt dating back to Roman times, which was only discovered in the mid-1960’s during some excavation work. It was absolutely fascinating

While much of Paris, France and the world is (rightfully) focused on the devastation to the building, I fear that the crypt has sustained massive and irretrievable damage.

A terrible loss.
