With a population of about 280,000 Newark, New Jersey is the largest city in the state. How many officers do you think fired their weapons while on duty in 2020?

If you said “zero,” you are correct.

In this Facebook statement from the city’s Department of Public Safety, Director Anthony Ambrose writes that the police department’s systemic de-escalation training has paid dividends. Crime went down 6% and nearly 500 illegal firearms were taken off the streets.

And, most importantly, “not a single officer fired his or her weapon while on duty.”
