On this, the shortest day of the year, I note than 2/3’s of Americans favor eliminating daylight saving time.
I’m in the minority.
And think about it: when we “fell back” in November, we consigned the folks in northeastern Maine to a sunset at 3:45 pm on December 10th. Meanwhile, if we kept standard time, those same folks would begin to see daylight as early as 3:39 a.m. in June.
On the other hand, if we adopted daylight saving time year-round, some North Dakotans wouldn’t get sunrise until after 9:45 a.m. for part of the winter. And, due to their proximity at the western edges of the Eastern time zone, all of Michigan and most of Indiana, including the Detroit and Indianapolis metro areas, would have at least some post-9 a.m. winter sunrises.
Just be glad you don’t live in China: it spans five geographical time zones, but adheres to a single standard time.
