Fyodor Dostoyevski is credited with the maxim that “the soul of a society can be measured by its prisons.”

I’m not sure how impressed he’d be with the prisons in this country.

Ten times as many seriously mentally ill people are being held in U.S. jails and prisons as are being treated in hospitals. Experts estimate that between 200,000-300,000 prisoners have major psychological problems. That’s 10-15% of the prison population.
