23-year-old Shane Jenkins of Portishead in Somerset in the U.K. had a few drinks, snorted some cocaine, smoked some pot, and then smashed his former partner’s window with a broom. When the police arrived, he fled from their custody.

Last week, after pleading guilty to escape, two counts of assault and a charge of destroying property, Jenkins was sentenced to what may be the shortest jail term ever imposed: 50 minutes.

He used that time writing letters of apology to the police and his ex-girlfriend.

The judge concluded the sentencing hearing by admonishing Jenkins: “You will not be a drug-hazed layabout.”
