Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts is an interesting place, which I visited when my son was looking at college. It is part of the “Five College Consortium” with Amherst, UMass, Smith and Mount Holyoke, it offers self-driven curricula and no grades, and has graduated such luminaries as author Jon Krakauer and filmmaker Ken Burns.
And, like a lot of small, liberal arts colleges, it’s in a heap of trouble.
According to this article in the Boston Globe, in a typical year, 300 freshmen would come to Hampshire in the fall. The number this year? 14.
As we say in the law, res ipsa loquitur.
