It’s the rare occasion when I get to share good news on the climate change front, and rarer still when the news comes from one of the largest corporations in the world.

But check this out.

Toyota has 24,000 different patents related to electric motor vehicles. And each and every one of them is now free for the asking. Wanna build a hybrid or electric vehicle using all of Toyota’s trade secrets? Go ahead. And it won’t cost you a dime.

Says Shigeki Terashi, Toyota’s Executive Vice President, “Based on the high volume of inquiries we receive about our vehicle electrification systems from companies that recognize a need to popularize hybrid and other electrified vehicle technologies, we believe that now is the time for cooperation.  If the number of electrified vehicles accelerates significantly in the next ten years, they will become standard, and we hope to play a role in supporting that process.”

Sure, there’s a method to Toyota’s madness; the company hopes that its protocols will become the industry norm. But do you see any other company — in any other sphere of business — doing this?
