Greetings from Boston, where I attended a performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the venerable Colonial Theatre last night.  All theatre-goers had to provide proof of vaccination before they could enter the facility, and all were required to wear a mask (and, as far as I could tell, mask compliance was 100%).

Not only was the show absolutely terrific, it was just such a wonderful feeling to see live musical theatre again.

But here’s the weird part. The actor who was slated to perform as Judas, James Beeks, had been replaced by a stand-in. What happened to Beeks? It turns out that he was removed from the tour after being arrested on November 23rd of last year. For his role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. A copy of the 30-page indictment (which makes for surprisingly interesting reading) can be viewed HERE.

And just in case things weren’t weird enough, at his arraignment, Beeks informed the court that he didn’t accept the court’s jurisdiction over him, and the production company that employed him said that he recently informed the company that he is a “sovereign citizen.”

As Judas himself says in the show: “It seems to me a strange thing, mystifying.”

The guy who played Judas at last night’s performance was, by the way, sensational.
